Helen Genova
Helen M. Genova, PhD, is the Assistant Director of the Center for Neuropsychology and Neuroscience Research and director of the Social Cognition and Neuroscience Laboratory at Kessler Foundation. She is also assistant research professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers University-NJ Medical School.
Since the start of her professional career in 2007, Dr. Genova has studied social functioning across a number of populations, including adults with Multiple Sclerosis and Traumatic Brain Injury. Through a collaboration with Dr. Matthew Smith, Dr. Genova has begun to apply her expertise in social functioning to young adults with autism. Recently, Dr. Genova was awarded a K-level grant from the NIMH to develop her expertise in transition age youth with autism.
Dr. Genova received her BA in psychology from Seton Hall University in 2000 and her PhD in Neuroscience from Rutgers University in 2007. She has presented her research at both national and international meetings, and she has pioneered research on studying and treating social cognition deficits in adults with neurologic disorders. She has successfully obtained grant funding to study social functioning as principal investigator (PI) from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the New Jersey Commission on Traumatic Brain Injury Research, Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, and The Governor’s Council for Medical Research and Treatment of Autism. Her work on autism has also been supported by the Children’s Specialized Hospital of NJ and the Reitman Foundation. She is currently PI on a project funded by National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and a field-initiated project funded by National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR).
